July 2, 2023The complete blood count (CBC) test is a common blood test that provides valuable information about different components of your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It is used to evaluate overall health, screen for various medical conditions, and monitor treatment responses.

The CBC test requires a blood sample, typically taken from a vein in your arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The components measured in a CBC test and their normal ranges include:
- Red Blood Cells (RBC): Measures the number of red blood cells in a given volume of blood. The normal range for adults is typically between 4.5 and 5.5 million cells per microliter (mcL) for men, and 4.0 to 5.0 million cells per mcL for women.
- Hemoglobin (Hb): Measures the amount of oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. The normal range for adults is typically between 13.5 and 17.5 grams per deciliter (g/dL) for men, and 12.0 to 15.5 g/dL for women.
- Hematocrit (Hct): Measures the percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells. The normal range for adults is typically between 38.8% and 50.0% for men, and 34.9% to 44.5% for women.
- White Blood Cells (WBC): Measures the total number of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in the immune system. The normal range for adults is typically between 4,500 and 11,000 cells per mcL.
- Platelets: Measures the number of platelets involved in blood clotting. The normal range for platelets is typically between 150,000 and 450,000 platelets per mcL.
Interpretation of CBC test results should be done in consultation with a healthcare professional. They will consider your symptoms, medical history, and other factors to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment plan, if necessary.
It’s important to note that the normal ranges provided here are general guidelines and may vary depending on the laboratory and specific testing methods used. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive interpretation of your CBC test results.
