Pancreatic Amylase

The Pancreatic Amylase test measures the level of the enzyme amylase in the blood. Amylase is primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands, and it plays a crucial role in the digestion of carbohydrates.

The test is performed by taking a blood sample, usually from a vein in your arm, which is then analyzed in a laboratory. Pancreatic amylase levels are reported in units per liter (U/L) or international units per liter (IU/L).

The Pancreatic Amylase test is used to evaluate pancreatic function and diagnose or monitor pancreatic disorders, such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Elevated levels of pancreatic amylase in the blood can indicate pancreatic damage or dysfunction.

The normal range for pancreatic amylase levels may vary slightly depending on the laboratory and the specific assay used. However, a general reference range for pancreatic amylase is typically between 23 and 85 U/L or 0.38 and 1.42 µkat/L.

In addition to blood testing, amylase levels can also be measured in urine samples. Urine amylase levels may be useful in the diagnosis of pancreatic disorders, particularly when pancreatic involvement is suspected but blood levels are not elevated.
